My 10 year old wants to begin boxing training, do you think it’s safe to start so young?

Hi Julie,
Yes, absolutely safe, in theory (well, in my gym and in my experiences with other gyms) we won’t start very light sparring until 12 years.
Usually I teach children’s classes aged 6 to 12 and the lessons involve, Games, Learning Techniques, Bag Work, Pad Work and Small Circuits.
I have had nothing but positive feedback from the parents. A few of the children are shy at first but by the 3rd session, really come out of themselves. Keeping active at age 10 is essential, instead of PlayStation and TV, so any activities they can join in and have fun is a bonus – especially as boxing teaches self defence, boosts their confidence, teaches them to co-ordinate their bodies and also understand the importance of fitness.
I would definitely encourage you to take your 10 year old, but if you are worried it might be worth asking if you can watch for the first couple of sessions, just so you can have peace of mind.
