This question is similar from Kay and Richard. It can depend on the gym, but I would say in most cases that it will be completely up to you if you want to participate in sparring or competitive fighting. No gym SHOULD put absolute beginners in a ring for sparring. You definitely need to get the basics down first and know how to defend yourself, otherwise people can get hurt.
I believe that finding a good gym and training is the best way to improve your boxing, but I also believe that if you follow a good online training scheme like Sneak Punch you can build up a good foundation and understand the basics, as well as benefit from some insider sparring techniques and other boxing tricks that will be applicable all the way up to the professional boxer.
Before I let my students spar, I make sure they have a good understanding of the basics and usual get them to go through two man drills, then one attack and one defend before completing an open spar. During the sparring sessions I insist they keep the power down and concentrate on technique (using their brains and not their brawn).
So in answer to your questions, a good gym should cater for the individual and should not force anyone to spar or fight unless they are willing and ready to do so.
I hope this helps and thanks again for the question.
