‘How to Box’ – Season 2, Episode 6 – ‘Stuck in the Corner’
The corner is not a place you want to be in boxing, you need to make sure you train your footwork well and practise your ring craft to avoid this at all costs. But when you start boxing training and sparring for the first time, you might well find yourself there. it is definitely well worth you taking these techniques on board and filing them away for a later date, for when or if you get caught in the corner.
Time is of the essence, the longer your are stuck in the corner, the more likely the chances of you being hit and taking unnecessary punches from your opponent. The start of all the techniques that I show in this quick video, are to cover up and sit down slightly in your stance, this makes you less of a target for your opponent to hit.
The next step is to get in close to your opponent, getting close limits their space to throw punches which in turn means less power. From this position you can put both arms around your opponent to hold their arms in place and swing them around, placing them in the corner. Or you can slip and step to either side, placing your glove on their back or arm to encourage them towards the corner.
You need to practise these to perfect the technique, making it a subtle and flowing movement, the last thing you want to be doing is side stepping and blatantly shoving your opponent into the corner. This will be pulled up by the ref, but I would still say this is better than being in the corner and having hurtful shots reigning in.
Give it a go in sparring and let me know how you get on, but otherwise KEEP AWAY FROM THOSE CORNERS!! 🙂
